History and Importance

Indianapolis opened its municipal airport in 1931 on farmland southwest of downtown, and the field grew alongside the city through the jet age. In November 2008 the Indianapolis Airport Authority moved passenger operations into the Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal, a midfield building named for the Indiana aviator and World War I ace. The airport also hosts the second largest FedEx hub in the world, which makes Indy a major cargo gateway for the Midwest. Travelers have recognized the passenger experience too: IND has collected the J.D. Power customer satisfaction award for medium sized airports eight times.

Airlines Serving IND

A wide group of carriers operates at Indy, including Southwest, American, Delta, United, Alaska, Allegiant, Frontier, Breeze, Sun Country, Air Canada and Aer Lingus. Avelo and JetBlue joined the lineup in 2026, with JetBlue starting a daily Fort Lauderdale nonstop on November 2. Aer Lingus links Indianapolis with Dublin, the first regularly scheduled transatlantic route in the airport's modern history.

Domestic Destinations

IND now offers roughly 58 nonstop destinations. Popular domestic routes reach Atlanta, Chicago O'Hare and Midway, Dallas, Denver, Charlotte, Nashville, New York, Washington, Boston, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Burbank, Seattle, Portland and a long list of Florida cities such as Orlando, Tampa, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale. New 2026 service added Frontier flights to Phoenix, Las Vegas, Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale, Allegiant to Burbank and Southwest to San Juan.

Terminal Layout

The Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal places Concourse A and Concourse B on either side of a central security checkpoint and the Civic Plaza, a bright public hall lined with local art, shops and dining. Baggage claim sits on the lower level, and a covered walkway leads from the terminal to the parking garage, where the Ground Transportation Center occupies the first floor. The single terminal design keeps walking distances short, which helps when a chauffeur is waiting just one level away.

Passenger Traffic

Indy served over 10.6 million passengers in 2025, its third record year in a row. October 2025 became the first month in IND history to pass one million travelers, and October 9 of that year set the single busiest day ever during the fall break rush. Spikes like these are worth planning around when you schedule a pickup.

Parking Overview

The terminal garage offers hourly parking at $2 per half hour and daily parking at $23. Valet in front of the terminal runs $32 a day, the Park and Walk lot costs $14, and the Economy lot is $9 per day with shuttle service. The Cell Phone Lot and the Airport Service Plaza are free for drivers waiting on arrivals, though rates can change, so confirm on the airport site before a long trip.

Pickup and Drop Off Guidance

For departures, your chauffeur pulls up to the upper level curb outside the ticketing doors for a quick unload. For arrivals, prearranged limousines and private car services stage at the Ground Transportation Center on level one of the garage, reached by walking out of baggage claim and following signs across the covered walkway. If you request meet and greet, your driver waits near the baggage claim exit holding a sign with your name, then walks you to the vehicle.

Ground Transportation Options

Taxis, rideshare pickups, hotel shuttles and rental car counters all connect at or near the Ground Transportation Center. IndyGo Route 8 runs between the airport and downtown Indianapolis on a fixed schedule, which suits light packers with time to spare. Travelers who need a door to door transfer, a larger vehicle or a guaranteed ride at 1 a.m. tend to book a private car or limousine in advance.

Tips for Arriving Passengers

Before You Fly

  • Add your flight number to the booking so dispatch can follow delays in real time
  • Send headcount and bag totals, including golf clubs or strollers
  • Check the INDOT Trafficwise map during winter storms or construction season on I 70 and I 465

After You Land

  • Turn your phone on at the gate; your chauffeur texts a name and vehicle description
  • Collect bags on the lower level, then head for the covered walkway
  • Call dispatch if a gate change or customs hold delays you; wait time adjusts with your flight

Why a Prebooked Chauffeur Is Often the Easier Choice?

Rideshare apps can surge two or three times the normal price after a convention lets out or a delayed bank of flights arrives together, and drivers sometimes cancel once they see a long suburban trip. Taxi lines are first come, first served, with no promise of a clean SUV for six people. A prebooked chauffeur is assigned to you alone, knows your name and flight, and has the right vehicle size waiting. For business travelers who need to take calls on the road or families with car seats, that certainty usually outweighs the small price difference. Travelers who only need a sedan can also reserve our IND car service for direct terminal to door trips.

Our Fleet for IND Transfers

Each vehicle below is available for airport pickups and drop offs anywhere in Indiana. Capacity numbers are maximums; we recommend leaving a seat or two open on longer routes when you carry full size luggage.

Sedans: Up to 3 Passengers

Ideal for business travelers, couples and quick hotel transfers downtown. Sedans fit two to three riders with standard suitcases and keep fares at the lowest tier.

SUVs: Up to 6 Passengers

A smart pick for families, ski or golf bags and small executive teams. Four to six riders travel comfortably with generous cargo space behind the third row.

Stretch Limousines: Up to 20 Passengers

Built for anniversaries, wedding parties and VIP arrivals. Groups of 8 to 20 enjoy perimeter seating, mood lighting and a chilled refreshment area on the way into the city.

Sprinter Vans: Up to 14 Passengers

A favorite for corporate crews, bridal parties and youth sports teams. Ten to fourteen guests ride in high roof cabins with standing headroom, WiFi on request and rear luggage storage.

Party Buses: Up to 30 Passengers

Perfect for bachelor and bachelorette weekends, milestone birthdays and race weekend celebrations. Groups of 20 to 30 get a sound system, lighting and room to move around.

Mini Charter Buses: Up to 35 Passengers

Sized for conference delegations, church groups and school trips. Twenty five to thirty five riders travel with underfloor bag storage and reclining seats.

Full Size Charter Buses: Up to 56 Passengers

The right call for large conventions, band tours and athletic programs. Up to 56 guests move together with restrooms on most coaches and ample cargo bays.

Where We Drive from IND Across Indiana?

Downtown Indianapolis and the Convention District

The drive from the terminal to Monument Circle takes about 20 minutes outside rush hour. We handle frequent runs to the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the JW Marriott and hotels along Washington Street, plus Mass Ave and Fountain Square for dinner reservations.

Hamilton County and the Northern Suburbs

Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield and Zionsville make up a large share of our IND bookings, along with Plainfield, Avon, Brownsburg and Greenwood on the west and south sides. Corporate campuses near Keystone at the Crossing and the Fishers District see steady weekday traffic.

College Towns and Regional Cities

Parents and visiting faculty often book transfers to Bloomington for Indiana University, about an hour south of the airport. We also cover Purdue in West Lafayette, Ball State in Muncie, Columbus, Kokomo, Terre Haute, Richmond and longer trips to Fort Wayne, Evansville and South Bend.

Event Weekends at the Speedway

May brings the Indianapolis 500 and hundreds of thousands of fans to Speedway, just minutes from the airport. Our dispatch team builds staggered schedules for race morning and post race departures.

Race Day Planning Tips

Book four to six weeks ahead for Memorial Day weekend, share your parking credentials, and plan an early arrival since roads near the track close well before green flag.

What to Keep in the Vehicle

Sunscreen, ear protection, water and a phone charger make the trip home after a long day at the track far more comfortable.

Group and Team Arrivals

Wedding parties, youth tournaments and corporate offsites often land on several flights. Our Sprinter van service at Indiana airports lets us stage vans in waves, so nobody waits for the last connection before heading out.

Corporate Accounts and Executive Travel

Companies headquartered in Indianapolis and Carmel rely on Union Limousine for roadshows, board visits and recruiting trips.
