History and Importance

The field opened as Naval Air Station Olathe in the early 1940s, training pilots for World War II and later serving as headquarters of the Naval Air Transport Service, the Navy's own airline. The Johnson County Airport Commission acquired the site in 1973 and called it Johnson County Industrial Airport. The county renamed it New Century AirCenter in 1995 to reflect the technology firms of New Century Commerce Center.

Today IXD is historically the third busiest towered airport in Kansas.
