History and Importance

Construction at the site began on June 13, 1939, with temporary grass runways. The first terminal opened on April 19, 1953, coinciding with the start of Continental Airlines DC 3 flights. The current terminal opened in two phases between 2015 and 2016 and replaced the 1997 building. American Eagle service began in August 2009, and a runway reconstruction paused commercial flights in 2023 before American Airlines resumed service on September 25, 2023. Today MHK is the second busiest commercial airport in Kansas and the front door for Kansas State University, Fort Riley and the Flint Hills.
